Doctoral thesis

Cost-effectiveness of Escherichia coli O157:H7 control in the beef chain

Wageningen University, 2007 · Promotor Prof. Dr Ir R.B.M. Huirne; co-promotors Dr Ir A.G.J. Velthuis and Dr Ir H. Hogeveen · ISBN 978-90-8504-641-7

A quantitative assessment of interventions against VTEC O157 at two levels of the Dutch beef-supply chain — dairy farms and industrial slaughterhouses. Combining stochastic epidemiological simulation with deterministic economic models, the work shows that slaughterhouse decontamination (carcass trim, steam-pasteurisation) is more cost-effective than farm-level or whole-chain intervention, while vaccination and colicin supplementation offer the best on-farm cost-effectiveness ratios.
