Career journey

Each milestone expands to show what the role involved, the methods it relied on and, where public, a piece of selected work.

How I solve a decision

The same seven steps sit behind almost every assignment — the methods change, the sequence rarely does.

  1. 01
    Define the decision

Who decides, on what budget, by when.

  2. 02
    Map disease and production systems

    Epidemiology, value chains and exposure.

  3. 03
    Estimate burden and distributional effects

Who bears the losses, and where.

  4. 04
    Compare interventions

Costs, effects and feasibility, side by side.

  5. 05
    Model uncertainty and incentives

Ranges, not point estimates; behaviour, not assumptions.

  6. 06
    Build the investment case

    Returns, sequencing and financing options.

  7. 07
    Communicate a decision-ready recommendation

One page a minister or board can act on.

Cost-benefit analysis

What it answers
Does the value created by an intervention exceed its full cost?
When I use it
When a government or funder must justify committing budget to a control programme.
Example from my work
Framing preparedness and vaccination investment in the FAO rapid economic impact assessment of FMD SAT1 in Asia and the Pacific.
